Antibacterial properties of drug-free cannabinoids

09.07.2020

Attention should be paid to the efficacy of the antibacterial properties demonstrated by drug-free cannabinoids. The available data suggest that the use of the leaves and inflorescences of technical hemp for therapeutic purposes makes sense to consider not only in the body care industry, hair or oral cavity.

On the pages of the specialized electronic edition of Ukrainian cannabis growers, it has already been described how one of the world's most famous cosmetic brands introduces to the market “Toothpaste with hemp seed oil”. Carrying out the study “Hemp beauty industry in the world and in Ukraine (from the use of derivatives of grain, young shoots and roots in the formulations of cosmetic preparations, to the“ green mass ”of cannabisa," the specialists of the information and analytical platform Hemp Consulting found data from our Belgian colleagues, What forms can the non-narcotic cannabinoids contained in the leaves and inflorescences of technical hemp for therapeutic purposes in the beauty and body care industries be used? A summary of the Belgians' findings are summarized below.

Plaque is a global health problem affecting people of different age groups, gender, and wealth. Drug-free cannabinoids are gaining tremendous attention from researchers, also due to their antimicrobial properties. It is these characteristics that have been tested by specialists from Belgium in the refraction of the possibility of their use in oral care products, which should effectively cope, including with aerobic bacteria in dental plaque.

Two mouthwash products filled with non-drug cannabinoids were tested: one sample contained cannabidiol (CBD), the other contained cannabigerol (CBG). All categories of bacteria were examined from various plaque samples collected from 72 adults aged 18 to 83 years. To compare the effectiveness of cannabinoid products, the study included two of the most common over-the-counter oral care products (Product A - is a mouthwash containing essential oils and alcohol4 Product B - is a mouthwash that does not contain alcohol, which contains fluorine). In addition, for the purity of the experiment and for a positive control, during the studies, a product containing 0.2% chlorhexidine digluconate was tested in parallel.

The results obtained indicate that, on average, mouthwash formulations containing non-narcotic cannabinoids demonstrated the same bactericidal efficacy as chlorhexidine 0.2%. Mouthwash products with both chlorhexidine 0.2% and cannabidiol and cannabigerol were effective against all bacterial samples tested. Product A did not show any significant antimicrobial activity in any of the samples tested, except that very little inhibition with a zone of 7-8 mm was observed in only 9 samples. Product B did not show any detectable zone of inhibition at all in any of the samples tested.

The ranges of the suppression zones (and their average value) were:

- 8-25 mm (average 18.1 mm) for CBD mouthwash

- 8-25 mm (17.7 mm) for CBG mouthwash

- 12-25 mm (16.8 mm) for chlorhexidine 0.2%;

- 0-8 mm (0.1 mm) for Product A;

- 0 mm for Product B.

The results of these experiments demonstrate the potential of cannabinoids in developing effective and safer mouthwash and next generation oral care products without fluoride and alcohol.

Commentary of experts of the Association "Ukrainian technical hemp"

Dental plaque is a complex biofilm consisting of various types of microbial communities that accumulate on the surface of the teeth, which ultimately contributes to the development of caries and periodontal disease. Plaque development involves the attachment of primary colonizing bacterial species to the enamel saliva film, followed by secondary colonizers through interspecies interactions and communication. Various factors can affect dental health, including diet and lifestyle. Oral hygiene requires proper regular care using suitable products, and rinsing after brushing your teeth effectively reduces plaque and the possibility of gum disease. Experiments conducted by our Belgian colleagues have confirmed that over-the-counter mouthwash products on the market are ineffective against significant amounts of bacteria in the mouth.

Chlorhexidine is currently recognized as the most effective mouthwash for plaque control. Often referred to as the “gold standard” in dentistry, it is reported to be very effective in reducing plaque, gingivitis and biofilm formation; however, it causes the unpleasant side effects of tooth discoloration / staining and calcium excretion.

Accordingly, non-drug cannabinoids of plant origin have antibacterial activity against almost all bacteria contained in the oral cavity and do not have any currently known negative consequences of their long-term use, which makes them an ideal candidate for use in modern dentistry.

Conclusion - Most of the published studies show that mouthwash containing chlorhexidine is the most effective, however, staining the teeth is an unacceptable side effect of using the above product, which makes it impossible to use products containing it for everyday or frequent use. Formulated with drug-free cannabinoids such as CBD and CBG, formulations have shown promising bactericidal activity against total cultured aerobic bacteria in plaque, with potency equal to or better than the gold standard (0.2% chlorhexidine). Mouthwash products containing plant cannabinoids offer a safer and more effective alternative without any fluoride or alcohol. Based on Belgian research, it can be concluded that mouthwash products containing drug-free cannabinoids are a much safer, more effective and natural alternative to alcohol and / or fluoride mouthwashes.

Attention should be paid to the efficacy of the antibacterial properties demonstrated by drug-free cannabinoids. The available data suggest that the use of the leaves and inflorescences of technical hemp for therapeutic purposes makes sense to consider not only in the body care industry, hair or oral cavity.
