The level of knowledge in the field of hemp construction of our specialists is often incomparable with foreign colleagues specializing in this topic and the consequence of this is the lack of practice of participation of students of specialized universities in the design and construction of low-carbon buildings, which are based on the exclusive properties of hemp.

Emphasizing the incomparable benefits of hands-on learning, a group of London Metropolitan School of Architecture students designed and built an award-winning CASS studio prototype in the English countryside. Led by Palom Gormley and David Grandorge, a group of trainees successfully built a 30-meter wooden studio with walls filled with boned concrete at Margent Farm in Huntingdon, UK.

The idea of ​​construction was to create a studio space that could be easily transformed, if necessary, in accordance with the tasks set for the implementation of specific projects.

The building rises above the ground and consists of a wooden frame, the walls of which are filled with fire-reinforced concrete. The outer side of the structure is covered with corrugated sheets of biocomposite materials based on bio-resin and hemp fiber. At the request of the customer, this kind of coating was specially developed as an alternative to steel or plastic coatings, which are commonly used in the English construction market.

The total project budget was approximately £ 10,000, with construction completed in just 12 days.

Studio CASS was awarded the AJ small projects 2020 award as a cutting edge sustainable development project. The student project was recognized for its "spirit and simplicity" and "expert" use of materials. 

For a rather short time, we have already described projects of students of various architectural universities, implemented using hemp building materials in the course of work in:

- Morocco ;

- France ;

- Holland ;

- Great Britain .

Despite the fact that hemp construction in our country has intensified over the past few years in connection with the "launch" of 2 new factories for the primary processing of hemp trusts, we have to state with regret that no one is currently analyzing this segment of the hemp industry in our country does not work in detail. The first attempt to analyze the situation in the hemp construction industry in Ukraine was made within the walls of the "Hemp University" within the framework of the round table "Hemp raw materials - technologies for its use in construction, production of biocomposite materials and furniture". With regret, it is necessary to state that the level of knowledge in the field of hemp construction of our specialists is often incomparable with foreign colleagues specializing in this subject and the consequence of this is the lack of practice of participation of students of specialized universities in the design and construction of low-carbon buildings, which are based on the exclusive properties of hemp.
