US investigates the feasibility of using hemp leaves and inflorescences as pet food

07.10.2020

Scientists are looking to find out if hemp-derived meat can benefit consumers because of the therapeutically active elements in the plant, which should theoretically remain in it.

Since 2015, many regions of the United States have seen an exponential increase in the acreage of industrial hemp. For example, in the state of Oregon, the hemp industry is experiencing a kind of boom, which is reflected in the official statistics of acreage for several years - there is an increase from 105 acres (42.5 hectares) in 2015 to 62,000 (25.0 thousand hectares) in 2019 . ??

Such rapid growth is quite logical, since interest in the industry is growing, given the possibilities for the use of hemp raw materials in various areas of modern farming. The greatest demand today is for the medical direction of using the leaves and inflorescences of the hemp plant, it is also important to make bioplastics, heaters from this raw material, use "green mass" as energy raw materials or food products, as well as feed or biologically active additives.

Many cannabis farmers are increasingly trying to find a full use of the products of primary processing of the seed part of the plant with a high leaf content - the so-called "heap". Interest in this kind of research is shown not only by agricultural producers, but also by employees of specialized universities in the country. In particular, specialists from the University of Oregon decided to study the issue of the revolutionary use of such biomass as a complete feed for agricultural livestock. Scientists specializing in nutrigenomics (the relationship of animal / human nutrition to the development of the body) note that hemp biomass has significant potential as animal feed, since it contains a number of components necessary for a living organism (cannabinoids, terpenes, terpenoids, finols, etc.) .) that a person / animal cannot get from other food sources. The effectiveness of such hemp feed is also emphasized by the economic component, the refinement and sale of which brings additional income to producers.

The relevance of this kind of research with hemp biomass in the American pet food market is undeniable. The fact is that, until now, in the United States, hemp as animal feed is considered unsafe, so any hemp-based livestock product will be considered poor quality and unhealthy.

The study began by testing sheep and the effect of replacing alfalfa with hemp biomass in their diets, as well as the plant's effect on animal meat quality. The experiment consisted of five groups of animals:

- control group: animals received a normal diet;

- low cannabis content in feed 1: during the first four weeks, a 10% hemp biomass diet is consumed, followed by a normal diet for the last four weeks;

- Low hemp in feed 2: feeding 10% green mass of hemp in the feed for a full eight weeks;

- high hemp content in feed 1: during the first four weeks, animals consumed 20% of the hemp biomass in the feed, and then a normal diet during the last four weeks;

- high cannabis content in feed 2: complementary foods with 20% cannabis leaves and flowers in the feed for a full eight weeks.

The animals were also given an acclimatization period for the "purity" of the study, during which all sheep received the same control diet for two weeks until their experimental diets were randomly distributed. researchers in the course of the experiment - clarifying the question of how the different content of hemp biomass in the feed affects the animals in general and how such a diet will affect the quality of meat. The analysis is carried out for many indicators, including taste and organoleptic properties, as well as the smell of the obtained products of animal origin, as well as the ability of the resulting products for long-term storage. Finally, scientists are looking to find out if hemp-derived meat can benefit consumers because of the therapeutically active elements in the plant, which should theoretically remain in it.

The use of hemp biomass as feed is not just a solution to the problem of waste disposal in hemp production, but also the possibility of generating additional income while simultaneously reducing the process of environmental pollution. It should be borne in mind that both in the United States and in other parts of the world there are arid regions where the cultivation of any crops (potential animal feed) is completely impossible, and it is there that the fodder resource from the hemp plant would be accepted with great enthusiasm.

The group of scientists who laid the foundation for this study is going to continue a series of experiments with animal feeding, connecting dairy breeds of cows and poultry to it, which will provide diverse data on the effect of feed from hemp biomass on different groups of livestock.

In parallel, scientists at Kansas State University recently announced a $ 200,000 federal grant to experiment with hemp as feed for cattle. The multidisciplinary team of researchers includes toxicologists, pharmacologists, chemists and biologists who will be able to comprehensively assess the potential of the hemp plant as an animal feed.

Commentary of experts of the Association "Ukrainian technical hemp"

Alfalfa has been used as livestock feed for hundreds of years because of its high protein content and excellent taste. However, using hemp biomass instead of alfalfa can have several benefits. Primarily, the use of hemp biomass as feed will help farmers and the hemp industry by increasing the possibility of creating additional jobs. An additional advantage is the efficient use of agricultural products, which increases the economic component. There is also the possibility that hemp will improve animal health through its natural composition and the unique combination of therapeutically active components in the plant. Hemp biomass is a somewhat low fiber content with high digestibility and good feed protein values.

One of the main points that American scientists are trying to find out in the course of experiments is the ability of animals / birds to assimilate therapeutically active elements of the hemp plant, accumulate them in the body and provide meat, milk, eggs, and other products of animal origin with them with therapeutic properties. In this regard, American scientists are actively investigating the amount of therapeutically active elements that appear in animal products in order to draw a conclusion and the feasibility of feeding domestic animals / poultry "green mass of hemp", as well as to determine the therapeutic properties of the products obtained in this way. Certain aspects of research aimed at studying the impact on the quality of the resulting products in the course of feeding domestic animals / poultry exist in our country. One of the issues considered during the round table “ Experience of using the therapeutic elements of technical hemp as raw materials for food, cosmetics, biologically active or feed additives ”, held for the listeners of the 5th issue of “ Hemp University ” will be the coverage of the national experience of using Hemp “green mass” as feed for pets / poultry.
