Will hemp milk be a worthy alternative to cow's milk

06.03.2020

Grains are full of valuable nutrients: calcium, magnesium, potassium and iron, as well as vitamins A, B, C, D and E, I have a lot of protein and all amino acids that are vital for the human body. In addition, hemp seeds contain valuable unsaturated fatty acids omega-3, omega-6 and omega-9.

Anyone who stands in front of a milk shelf in a supermarket today is already spoiled for choice: in addition to ordinary cow's milk, bags / bottles of more and more new varieties, brands and types of herbal alternatives are on display. Interest in products to replace milk of animal origin is growing every year - and for those who want to replace cow's milk for reasons of belief or health, there are more than enough options so that they do not have to do without this product or its derivatives. Soy, almond and oat drinks are already on the market; it is not yet very widespread, however, another alternative to animal milk is already well known - hemp milk.

How useful is hemp milk

Hemp seeds have long been considered an absolute superfood among gourmets. Grains with a diameter of about three millimeters are full of valuable nutrients: calcium, magnesium, potassium and iron, as well as vitamins A, B, C, D and E, I have a lot of protein and all amino acids that are vital for the human body. In addition, hemp seeds contain valuable unsaturated fatty acids omega-3, omega-6 and omega-9.

All of these ingredients are highly concentrated in seeds and are ideal as a filling for porridge or salad and are therefore universally used as the basis for a healthy diet. For hemp milk or hemp drink - only products of animal origin can be officially called milk - cereals are crushed, mixed with water and, depending on the recipe, seasoned with salt and / or sugar.

Like all other alternatives to cow's milk, hemp does not contain either lactose or milk protein. Unlike oat milk, hemp does not contain, for example, gluten, and therefore is also suitable for people with celiac disease or those who cannot tolerate gluten. The good tolerance of hemp milk is also an advantage over soy: the protein found in beans can cause food intolerance. Compared to almond milk, hemp milk increases the protein content: 100 milliliters of hemp milk contains 1.3% protein, while the same amount of almond milk only 0.9%.

At 40 calories per 100 milliliters, hemp milk has the same amount of calories as cow milk. If hemp milk does not contain technical sugar, it does not include other sugars and is therefore ideal for a low-carb diet. The fat content of 3.5 grams per 100 milliliters can scare away a potential consumer, but such a quantity is a big advantage upon closer examination. These are healthy, unsaturated fatty acids that can be saturated for a long time and prevent food cravings.

How effective is hemp milk

Not only intolerance or a focus on the vegan diet, but also the impact on the environment encourage many to switch from cow's milk to vegetable milk. According to a report by the Albert Schweitzer Foundation, an average of 2.4 kilograms of carbon dioxide is released into the environment during the production of one liter of cow's milk, which has the same climate impact as burning one liter of gasoline. According to research conducted by the Water Footprint Network and Öko-Institut, an average of about 1000 liters of water is required to produce one liter of cow's milk.

According to information provided by the Albert Schweitzer Foundation, the popularity of almond milk is also often criticized. 80% of the world's processed almonds come from California. There, because of the hot temperature, almond trees require a lot of water, while huge plantations take up a lot of space. Massive almond cultivation is also the cause of bee death: industrial beekeeping, necessary for pollination of plantations, makes bees more susceptible to parasites and viruses.

As for the cultivation of industrial crops of technical hemp, the plant does not have a bad ecological balance and it can be grown on almost all soils, virtually removing the logistic component and significantly reducing the cost of the final product.

Commentary by the Ukrainian Technical Hemp Association

Until now, in our country hemp milk is relatively unknown and therefore is produced in relatively small quantities, most of them at home. During the round table “ Nutrition and Hemp ”, held as part of the “ Hemp University ”, problems and prospects for the development of hemp milk production on the territory of our country on an industrial scale were described. The development dynamics of this market of modern Ukrainian hemp breeding will be demonstrated during the next training course for students of the Hemp University , which will be held on April 7-9, 2020.
