Why Ukrainian cannabis growers are interested in the experience of developing the industry in Turkey

03.09.2020

Several national investment projects are being actively promoted in the country aimed at processing hemp fiber and obtaining products with high added value from it. One of these projects is aimed at creating a hemp pulp production facility in the area of the Turkish city of Malatya. Several more large Turkish companies are interested in "launching" production lines for producing hemp yarn, and the equipment necessary for this is planned to be located in the region of the city of Kayser. This is despite the fact that already three companies from Izmir and Manis are engaged in the production and sale of hemp textiles, knitwear and footwear.

Over the past 2 years, several production lines have been launched in Ukraine at once, specializing in the processing of hemp trusts. The consumer reacted extremely positively to the introduction of the hemp campfire on the market, which is well established. However, national cannabis growers faced the challenge of marketing one of the most valuable constituents of the hemp plant - fiber. Unfortunately, the domestic market is extremely small, so the amount of fiber already produced is excessive for it. In connection with the above, the experience of our Turkish colleagues is extremely interesting, who only by “launching” cannabis growing in their country immediately try to realize the possibilities of using hemp fiber. This experience is especially interesting because the legislation of our countries in the field of industrial cannabis growing is similar - in Turkey, as well as in Ukraine, the use of hemp leaves and inflorescences is currently prohibited, and the plant itself cannot be used for medical purposes.

It is necessary to immediately focus on the fact that over the past year, the production of technical hemp in Turkey has increased by 4 times. Turkish producers are already partially using hemp raw materials in the textile, food, cosmetics and paper industries. But the most interesting thing is that Turkish hemp fiber is being closely watched by German investors who are actively exploring the possibilities of using this raw material for the production of biocomposite materials in the interests of the largest automotive manufacturers in Europe. At the moment, negotiations are underway with several Turkish companies to create production facilities that will produce semi-finished products from hemp trusts, which are planned to be exported to Germany in the future. To implement the above project, within the framework of the business plan being developed, it is planned to attract investment resources in the creation of facilities for the primary processing of trusts in the amount of $ 15-20 million.

Commentary of experts of the Association "Ukrainian technical hemp"

To date, the cultivation of industrial crops of technical hemp in Turkey is carried out in 19 provinces of the country. The sown area, which in 2019 amounted to 1020 hectares, in 2020 increased to 4700 hectares (more than 4 times). About 85 percent of production and processing capacity is concentrated in Samsun and Amasya. At the moment, 2 local varieties of technical hemp “Vezir” and “Narl?” Are cultivated in Turkey.

During the first day of training of the 5th year students of the "Hemp University" with the heads of the existing facilities for the primary processing of hemp trusts, as well as companies that specialize in the production of hemp textiles, knitwear, footwear, the problem of selling hemp fiber will be discussed and possible ways will be outlined overcoming them. In addition, during the training, the initiatives of the profile association of Ukrainian cannabis growers will be presented to amend the current legislation related to the creation of a departmental regulatory and legal framework regulating the possibilities of using the "green mass" of the hemp plant for industrial purposes by methods that exclude extraction, as well as presented already initiated amendments to the current regulatory legal acts, which by their individual provisions hinder the development of modern cannabis farming in our country, making it uncompetitive. In addition, as a result of the event, an appeal will be initiated to the state authorities and administration of Ukraine with a proposal to create conditions that would help national entrepreneurs to sell hemp products with high added value produced in the country outside Ukraine, and also contribute to the development of the domestic market for the consumption of hemp products .
