Why business is interested in the production of paper from hemp

18.03.2020

As part of the development strategies of "green economies" of almost all developed countries of the world , the question of creating modern or transferring existing pulp production capacities from wood to hemp raw materials is being actively raised and implemented .

On the pages of the profile electronic publication of Ukrainian hemp breeders more than once the question was raised about the possibility, as well as the advisability of using technical hemp for paper production . In particular, it was described exactly what “ Methods of using hemp paper ” existed that are being actively commercialized in economically developed countries of the world . The essence of the " Ancient Chinese technology for the production of paper from hemp " has not changed to this day, however, methods for the production of hemp paperfor a long time based on the use of machines and mechanisms. Not only the mechanization of production allows you to effectively compete with hemp paper technology in the global pulp market . “ Why paper is made from hemp ” in the USA , France , as well as other economically developed countries of the world, we focused attention in a number of previous publications. However, there are basic principles, starting from which entrepreneurs are considering the need to create production facilities aimed at the production of hemp pulp . Based on the fact that several companies on the territory of our country are considering the possibility of creating production facilities , the basis of which is the use of hemp raw materials for pulp production, we emphasize precisely those points that form the basis of business plans for creating appropriate production chains .

The reasons why hemp pulp is actively used for paper production:

- production of paper from industrial hemp is cheaper than from traditional raw materials, as technological processes require less energy and chemicals. The traditional technology of pulping requires expensive aggressive chemicals in order to destroy wood fibers , and in the case of hemp raw materials this kind of “chemistry” is not needed;

- for the production of paper, cellulose, which is contained in plant material, is needed. In wood raw materials its share reaches 30%, and in hemp - up to 85%;

- hemp paper decomposes much faster under the influence of natural factors than paper made from other plant materials;

Technical hemp grows much faster than any other types of plant materials (primarily wood). Compared with the 50-year-old age of using industrial wood, pulp and paper production uses hemp raw materials , which are grown for 70-120 days;

- hemp produces four times more cellulose fiber per unit area than commercially planted 50-year-old wood plantations (individual varieties of industrial hemp can produce 12-15 tons of plant material per hectare on an industrial scale);

- during the cultivation of hemp plants does not require significant amounts of water;

- cultivation of industrial crops of industrial hemp allows you to restore the balance of nutrients in the soil;

- waste from the primary processing chain , for example, the production of hemp fiber , can be effectively used for the production of hemp pulp;

hemp fibers are odorless, able to absorb up to 400% of their own weight in liquids, are resistant to mold, a number of fungi, and also have antibacterial and antifungal properties, which allows them to be effectively used for the production of personal hygiene products;

- the mechanical properties of the plant make it possible to produce any type of cellulose (from valuable {stocks, banknotes, bonds} to toilet paper or corrugated packaging);

- the use of hemp pulp allows you to save the "light planet" - forests, from deforestation in the interests of the pulp and paper industry.

Commentary experts of the Association "Ukrainian industrial hemp"

Today, about 35% of cut trees are for paper production. A quarter of all solid waste at “landfills” is waste from pulp and paper production. The creation of traditional pulp and paper from wood raw materials accounts for about 20% of all toxic waste entering the atmosphere. During the production of one ton of paper from wood raw materials, it pollutes about 76 thousand liters of water. It is not surprising that within the framework of development strategies of "green economies" of practically all developed countries of the world, the question of creating modern or transferring existing pulp production capacities from wood to hemp raw materials is being actively raised and implemented. As part of the development strategies of "green economies" of almost all developed countries of the world , the question of creating modern or transferring existing pulp production capacities from wood to hemp raw materials is being actively raised and implemented .  It is for this reason that several entrepreneurs in our country are immediately considering the creation / re-profiling of production facilities capable of producing hemp pulp.
