US consumer groups caution against “hasty decisions” on CBD

22.06.2020

Through the lips of US public organizations specializing in protecting the rights of American consumers, I would like to emphasize that during the extraction, not only up to 90% of the therapeutic properties of individual plant components are destroyed, but the extraction procedure itself can lead to the appearance of a final product that carries danger to the human body. This is the fundamental difference between the use of hemp raw materials created by nature and offal obtained by exposure to temperature, solvents, pressure, etc. Three years of experience in the use of leaves and inflorescences of technical hemp with a therapeutic focus suggests that any negative effect from the use of leaves and inflorescences of technical hemp with a therapeutic focus is theoretically possible in case of individual intolerance (so far no such cases have been recorded), and the healing and therapeutic effect is evident. At the same time, hundreds of facts were documented of the use of technical hemp varieties of the therapeutic orientation of the Ukrainian selection “Mriya” for the treatment of various forms of severe diseases including chronic diseases resulting from the use of plant leaves and inflorescences as a tasty and healthy food, cosmetic product, biologically active or feed additives.

The four leading US consumer groups urge federal lawmakers to abandon efforts to speed up the legalization process for cannabidiol for use in biologically active / feed additives and foods, emphasizing that “forcing the FDA to make hasty decisions and prematurely introduce such changes in law, government officials are creating the conditions for an unsafe cannabinoid market. ”

“Well-Funded Speculators”

“Well-funded lobbyists are trying to impose on Congress the need to get carte blanche of their products, bypassing the supervision that ensures the safety and quality of goods on the market,” the signatories of the corresponding open letter sent June 17, 2020 to US lawmakers warned. In particular, the document notes that Congress is not a guarantor of the safety of consumer goods, so groups of American consumers say that "a political decision to legally abolish a thorough scientific assessment of the safety of non-drug cannabinoid extracts will set a terrible precedent."

Presented to members of the US House of Representatives and Senate, the letter is signed by officials of the following non-profit organizations: the Public Interest Research Center, the Consumers Union, the Public Health Institute, and the American Consumer Federation.

More time to study the risks.

The 8-page document states that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) needs more time and resources to properly assess the risks of using non-drug cannabinoids, especially cannabidiol.

The authors of the above letter cite a number of cases where the FDA sanctioned a ban for various reasons for the presence on the market of certain products containing cannabidiol, from the excessive content of tetrahydrocannabinol in foods and to their incorrect labeling. Attention is focused on repeated cases of the presence of heavy metals in products, there are manufacturers who produce supplements with synthetic cannabidiol in attractive forms for use by children or websites advertising drug-free cannabinoids as a palliative drug. An example is the case of the FDA sending warning letters to suppliers who have unprovenly stated the effectiveness of cannabidiol in treating the symptoms of COVID-19. It is emphasized that the only approved product containing cannabidiol “Epidiolex”, approved in the USA as a pharmaceutical product, at least according to clinical trials, causes liver damage.

Stimulating the need for training

In a paper prepared for US lawmakers, US consumer groups state that the FDA should request scientific evidence on the safety of cannabidiol in foods, dietary supplements, and feed additives, take steps to monitor adverse effects on users, and establish quality controls for products on the market which includes drug-free cannabinoids, in particular cannabidiol. The letter states that “Conducting additional research would stimulate a serious study of the risks associated with the use of products containing drug-free cannabinoids, as well as the development of appropriate procedures to control the quality of the final product throughout its supply chain. This process will determine the doses and specific conditions for the sale of drug-free cannabinoids, which will be legal and acceptable for the market. ”
