Scaling the Hemp Campfire Building Experience Implemented in France

The exclusive properties of building materials made from hemp in various projects for the construction of ecological areas are already being implemented not only in Paris, but also in Bulgaria, Australia, Holland, and a number of other economically developed countries of the world. Unfortunately, in our country, hemp construction technologies are not as developed as in the above countries, and only a few construction companies have the necessary skills and experience. At the moment, there are no initiatives in Ukraine aimed at generalizing the experience gained by individual specialists as a result of their hemp construction.

On the pages of the specialized electronic edition of Ukrainian cannabis growers, just two years ago, an initiative was described by representatives of the French construction industry aimed at studying the properties of the hemp plant in the project "Cities of Tomorrow" . Our French colleagues do not limit themselves exclusively to studying the exclusive properties of the hemp plant, which have been used for the construction of buildings and structures for centuries. The data obtained in the course of the research work is actively used in practice for the creation of even non-separate structures, built "to order". On the territory of first Paris, and now the Paris region, work is being carried out aimed at building an ecological area in a small village, the basis of building technologies in which will be precisely the use of a hemp fire.

In the small village of Trilport in the Ile-de-France region, the concept of building an ecological district is realized, in which biological and geo-resource materials prevail as building materials. The first in the project, at the beginning of 2021, should appear a 45-apartment building made of fire-reinforced concrete.

At first glance, the construction of the building is traditional in its design - it is planned to install concrete support beams, however, the space of the facade, walls, and other elements of the structure being erected will be filled with fire-reinforced concrete, which will allow the high-rise building to receive an appropriate environmental certificate. According to the architects who designed this structure, the bonfire concrete (a mixture of lime, water and hemp fire) perfectly insulates from the cold, but above all provides a very good shift in the summer heat phase: it takes about 10 hours to feel the change in temperature in the room. The studied experience of this kind of Australian building technologies suggests that inside a building built in this way, the temperature reaches 24 degrees inside the room when the outside thermometer rises to a temperature of over 40 degrees. An additional advantage of the project is the fact that the hemp campfire is obtained from the nearby industrial crops of industrial hemp. 

Two more residential buildings made of hemp building materials will be erected next to the first constructed building using fire-reinforced concrete. A special feature of the next stage of construction will be that the reinforced concrete will be “poured” into the wooden frame of the multi-storey buildings being created. In addition, it is planned to build ten tanhouses, which should also be built by erecting a wooden frame, subsequently filled with fire-reinforced concrete.

The next stages of the eco-block construction involve a variety of construction methods, which use wood, straw, flax or materials obtained from local geological sources (earth or stone).

Commentary of experts of the Association "Ukrainian technical hemp"

Trilpore currently has about 5 thousand inhabitants. According to the developed strategy for the development of the aforementioned settlement, in a few years the newly built eco-district “L'Acre de Lune” will have to accommodate 450 new buildings, including multi-apartment buildings. The phased commissioning of newly constructed buildings is due to the desire to avoid a sudden influx of population, which can significantly change the demographic situation in a small settlement.

The use of a hemp fire as a basic raw material for the construction of the ecological area “L'Acre de Lune” in the small village of Trilpor is due to several factors:

- taking into account the industrial crops of industrial hemp located near the settlement, as well as the availability of capacities for its primary processing, it is assumed that a hemp fire will be obtained without any additional investments in the project;

- creating a closed chain for the use of raw hemp in the region, the municipal authorities are preparing conditions for the creation of new jobs, involving the most efficient use of hemp raw materials;

- hemp raw material itself has a number of exclusive advantages that are used most effectively in this project. Campfire hemp is an excellent insulating material that provides excellent heat transfer, which allows you to not use the air conditioner in the future and significantly reduce heating bills in winter. Among other things, wood concrete is an effective hygroscopic material that absorbs most of the excess moisture in the living space, which removes the need for difficult-to-maintain ventilation systems. In addition to all of the above, kostrobeton perfectly resists open fire .

We have to admit that the exclusive properties of building materials made from hemp in various projects for the construction of ecological areas are already being implemented not only in Paris , but also in Bulgaria , Australia , Holland , and a number of other economically developed countries of the world. Unfortunately, in our country, hemp construction technologies are not as developed as in the above countries, and only a few construction companies have the necessary skills and experience. At the moment, there are no initiatives in Ukraine aimed at generalizing the experience gained by individual specialists as a result of their hemp construction. The first attempt to at least partially systematize what is happening on the hemp construction market of our country was the round table " Hemp raw materials - technologies for its use in construction, production of biocomposite materials and furniture ", held within the framework of the "Hemp University".
