Reasons New Zealand Dairy Farmers Retrained as Cannabis Producers

10.12.2019

One of the ways to intensify agriculture in New Zealand is the cultivation , as well as the processing of industrial hemp . That is why a number of New Zealand farmers ceased to engage in animal husbandry (growing dairy herds), and switched to cultivating industrial crops of technical hemp and, as one of the options for its use , promote a new agricultural product on the market - hemp milk .

New Zealand is known worldwide for its many flocks of sheep, goats and cows, but due to growing environmental problems, the most highly profitable crops are conquering New Zealand farmers, providing them with a sustainable growth perspective. Those. it is technical hemp that is an excellent solution for the growing environmental problems in the country , which agricultural producers of the island state are already facing.

Over the past few decades, New Zealand has been desperate for sustainable alternatives to industrial agriculture. A government report published in 2019 on the state of the environment of the island nation clearly demonstrated the grim picture of the catastrophic loss of biodiversity, contaminated water arteries and the destructive growth of the meat and dairy industry. In particular, it indicates that agriculture, which has been developing on an industrial scale for a long time, has led to significant environmental pollution. Significant agricultural land is contaminated with modern crop products (fertilizers, plant protection products or stimulation of their growth, etc.) with a huge amount of manure and, in connection with this, a significant amount of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.

The new rules, including new standards for raising dairy cows, immediately entered into force after a state-sponsored environmental audit showed that New Zealand is experiencing serious environmental problems associated with mass industrial-scale cattle and small cattle breeding.

One way to solve this problem, according to both government officials and agricultural producers, is the transition from inefficient and rather problematic livestock to intensive agricultural production involving the most efficient use of arable land.

Commentary of the Ukrainian Technical Hemp Association

Already no one doubts the fact that modern hemp breeding significantly improves the ecological situation in the region where hemp plants grow . For example, several years ago, Italian farmers attracted the attention of the whole world when they cultivated industrial hemp to clean contaminated soil. And this is not to mention the experience of cleansing the lands that emerged after the technological disaster caused by the Chernobyl accident.

Another vivid example of the proper use of hemp as a phytoremedian is the experience of an American poultry farm, where in order to fatten 45 thousand chickens for one of the largest poultry producers in the USA , a decision was made on the need to grow hemp grain . The owner of the aforementioned poultry farm no longer wants to support factory agriculture, as by growing , processing , and also using technical hemp, he not only earns more and rapidly expands his own production, but also significantly reduces the ecological footprint of the farm he runs. New Zealand dairy farmers also found that the cultivation and processing of industrial crops of industrial hemp is much more cost-effective for doing business .

The government released a sobering “environmental summary” of the country in May 2019, which points out huge problems with the New Zealand ecology. Until recently, one of the few structures that raised the question of the need to revise the principles of agricultural development in New Zealand were companies that were involved in attracting tourists to the island state . They pointed to the fact that the massive increase in dairy herds observed over the past 20 years has a significant destructive effect on the environment, as well as on the quality of fresh water in the country. It should be noted that during her election campaign, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern promised again to “revive” the country's rivers and lakes for the next generation. “Living in harmony with nature” is a new national strategy for the conservation of biodiversity, therefore initiatives of “dairy farmers” for the cultivation and processing of hemp find support at the government level.

In New Zealand, it is allowed to grow , process and sell cannabis seeds of low THC varieties as a food product . In the south of the country, a company operates in 2019 that grew industrial crops of technical hemp on an area of 500 hectares. In addition to 400 tons of grain , the company obtained a significant amount of hemp straw during the cultivation . In order to get significant added value, the company in 2019 began installing a line for primary processing of hemp straw / trust , which will be installed and launched by March 2020. In parallel with the installation of equipment for the primary processing of hemp straw / trusts , the aforementioned company entered into contracts for the production of non-woven materials , hemp yarn , and ecoplastics . In addition, the question of the possibility, as well as the feasibility of launching a production of pulp and paper products, is considered .

Another useful example for Ukrainian hemp breeders is the experience of attracting financial resources for the development in the country of the possibility of using the plant for medical purposes . Through a crowdfunding platform, the company started raising funds on November 6, 2019 in a few days raised 1.36 million New Zealand dollars, despite the fact that the goal was to raise an amount of 500 thousand for several months. Immediately after attracting the necessary funds for the work in the above manner, the New Zealand company received the necessary permits for the cultivation of hemp for medical purposes and entered into agreements with seven major manufacturers of pharmacological preparations in the country, declaring that the grown crop will be used in future for the production of medical preparations .
