How the US CBD market will change in the short term

03.08.2020

The size of the market of CBD products occupied by the companies in the USA

Currently, the over-the-counter CBD market in the US accounts for about 94% of sales. In addition, it is worth paying attention to the tendency according to which a significant number of small CBD companies that cannot find their consumer on the market or do not find significant financial resources for the development of the purchased brand will be forced to cease their activities. It makes sense to take a close look at the list of those who, in the opinion of American analysts, are able to continue to develop their business in the US CBD market in the next few years and to find out how promising investments in this sector of the hemp business are in the current conditions in our country.

At the moment, thousands of US CBD businesses are likely to end in 2020, according to an information and consulting company that has researched the US hemp market. Despite this, about 1500 companies will remain on the market, which will fight for their share of the US consumer market.

According to US analysts' calculations, the top 20 OTC CBD companies in the United States controlled only about 17% of the cannabinoid market in early 2020, while about 3,000 small CBD businesses accounted for about 77%. The largest foreign manufacturer of cannabinoid products, the English prescription drug manufacturer GW Pharmaceuticals, accounts for only 6% of CBD sales in the United States.

The size of the US CBD market by companies

According to American analysts, the excessive number of companies "crowding" in the market for cannabinoid products is the result of entrepreneurial activity of American citizens in relation to the country's booming cannabis industry. In 2019, a huge number of new entrants appeared on the CBD market, who earned less than $ 1 million per year - at the moment they occupy up to 97% of the market.

Experts from a number of American consulting companies believe that in 2020 such a wide range of firms present in the CBD market is likely to decrease significantly. One of the reasons for this kind of negative dynamics will be the rapidly developing COVID-19 epidemic in the United States, which will cause up to half of small CBD enterprises to “disappear” from the market. In particular, according to one of the leaders who research the CBD market of analytical companies, “Many firms that were interested in this segment of the business found the entry threshold unacceptable for them. A significant number of enterprises trying to work in the CBD market have not been able to make a profit, so they are already thinking about how to get out of this business. "

According to representatives of a number of American consulting companies, the following companies currently have the best chances in the falling CBD market in the United States:

•  long-term CBD brands, which were able to establish customer loyalty to the manufactured products and thereby form a consistently large sales market;

•  multidisciplinary legal medical cannabis operators who can afford capital and extensive dispensary and retail distribution networks. First of all, Canadian medical cannabis market operators operating in the United States due to the significantly developed infrastructure in the “country of the maple leaf” and established relationships with consumers / patients, as well as the legitimacy of investments in this type of activity in their country;

•  Complementary CBD brands that already have retail connections and experience marketing primarily nutritional supplements;

•  companies specializing in the production and sale of FMCG products that will release CBD products immediately after the regulatory framework in the United States regulates this type of activity;

•  pharmaceutical companies that seek to obtain permits for the entry of their drugs into the American market, given the enormous financial resources invested in gaining positions in the market of the most highly developed country in the world;

•  local companies that were able to achieve significant success in the sale of their products in a short period of time.

Commentary of experts of the Association "Ukrainian technical hemp"

The information provided by our American colleagues will be useful to Ukrainian cannabis growers for several reasons. Based on an analysis of the US CBD market, about 6% of the country's population uses prescription drugs in the most highly developed country in the world. These data correlate with the information provided by our colleagues from Uruguay on the same topic (from 10 to 12%). Accordingly, at the moment, the over-the-counter CBD market in the United States accounts for about 94% of sales. In addition, it is worth paying attention to the tendency according to which a significant number of small CBD companies that cannot find their consumer on the market or do not find significant financial resources for the development of the purchased brand will be forced to cease their activities. It makes sense to take a close look at the list of those who, according to American analysts, are able to continue to develop their business in the US CBD market in the next few years and to find out how promising investments in this sector of the hemp business are in the current conditions in our country.
