Hemp Hives

Swiss hemp

The researchers analyzed the conditions that can improve the living conditions of bees and came to the conclusion that hemp can act as a kind of compensator, creating the most comfortable conditions for the life of insects, close to their natural wild habitat.

Hemp has long been associated with a healthy lifestyle in many people familiar with this plant. Today you can find a lot of examples of the use of hemp from seed to stems and root. Hemp is used to make fabrics and building materials, cosmetics and medicines, food products and biocomposite materials. Therefore, it is not surprising that when scientists began to look for options for saving bees from extinction, they turned their attention to hemp plant. The idea of creating hemp hives originated at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich.

Innovative enthusiasts who were looking for ways to equip “bee dwellings” turned to the experience of building hemp houses, examples of which are available in Switzerland in sufficient quantities. For example, Schönthaler (a plant for the production of concrete blocks and building materials) produces bricks from industrial hemp or hemp blocks. In 2016, the first hemp house “Chenglia” was built over South Tyrol. The basis for the construction was the old 500-year-old house, which allowed the owner to realize the “hemp” dream.

Bee mortality is a fairly large global problem. Many beekeeping farms have existed for more than 200 years, and now they are losing their assets and are suffering enormous losses. The main causes of death in bee colonies are environmental degradation, climate change, and stress. The researchers analyzed the conditions that can improve the living conditions of bees and came to the conclusion that hemp can act as a kind of compensator, creating the most comfortable conditions for the life of insects, close to their natural wild habitat.

Mostly bees live in wooden hives, which are susceptible to fungal and mold damage. Such conditions catastrophically negatively affect the activity and life expectancy of bees and especially their uterus. Activists made several variants of hemp hives and placed bee families there. After the bees moved, families began to actively develop the territory, did not seek to leave their new houses, which is clearly a positive sign that they are comfortable in the new home. At the moment, researchers are not able to conduct an experiment on an industrial scale, but even the available data is already a breakthrough in solving problems in the beekeeping industry. The internal volume of the hives is 30 liters, which corresponds to the size of natural hollow trees in the wild.

The main objective of the project is the ability to create hives that will allow bees to develop independently, without the intervention of a beekeeper, and adapt to environmental conditions. It is noted that the use of hemp hives is advisable for small farms that are geographically close to hemp fields, and even better if houses and buildings using hemp materials are located nearby.

Hemp dwellings for bees are currently being tested, and families living in them are being monitored. The next step is the industrialization of bee hemp housing complete with hemp beehive technology. Hives can be easily made from hemp material. According to researchers, the material for building an apiary from hemp plants should cost about 50 euros.

Commentary experts of the Association "Ukrainian industrial hemp"

In economically developed countries, studies are conducted aimed at studying the comfort of stay of bees in hemp hives. There is a global trend aimed at creating comfortable conditions for a person to stay in buildings and structures, and the basis of a friendly environment is not the artificiality of the materials from which the room is created. The tendencies of the global hemp construction market and the achievements of leading national companies specializing in the use of hemp raw materials for the construction of buildings and structures were demonstrated at the round table “Hemp raw materials -  technologies for its use in construction, production of biocomposite materials and furniture ”, which was held as part of the “ Hemp University ” .
