Hemp construction - new or well-forgotten old

03.02.2020

Hemp buds in the SPA-complex Belchinskiy Izvor (Bulgaria)

Several hemp brick houses, which are part of the latest Belchinsky Izvor spa complex, were built by Glavbolgarstroy near the village of Belchin, located near Sofia. These cannabis houses are the highlight of the whole complex, as they bring a pleasant natural aroma and recreate details of the atmosphere in which our ancestors lived.

Often the new is the well-forgotten old, and with the rapidly evolving technologies, the revival of something from the past can cause a real revolution. This potential has the use of derivatives of technical hemp at a time when the construction industry is looking for innovative materials that are advisable to use to create indoor sensations of comfort, low energy consumption and a healthy living environment.

Health or Fashion

The main idea of green building is to optimize the use of resources, care for human health and reduce environmental impact. Therefore, the introduction into the construction business of natural materials used to build houses in the old days is extremely relevant today. Hemp bricks (blocks), hemp heaters or bonded concrete can find their place in the modern construction market, so some architects or designers are trying to create this kind of fashionable ecological niche in modern building solutions.

Recently, in economically developed countries, builders have been attracting solvent demand not with buildings made of metal, glass and innovative materials, but with the revival of old technologies and the skillful use of old traditions in construction and decoration, which provide not only the comfort of a modern home and office.

For example, several houses made of hemp brick, which are part of the latest Belchinsky Izvor spa complex, were built by Glavbolgarstroy near the village of Belchin, located near Sofia. These cannabis houses are the highlight of the whole complex, as they bring a pleasant natural aroma and recreate details of the atmosphere in which our ancestors lived. In summer, hemp structures remain cool and the rooms do not require air conditioning, and in winter it is easy to heat, in other words, living is much more economical.

Benefits of Hemp Bricks

Hemp bricks are made from industrial hemp, lime powder and a mixture of minerals. Industrial hemp has antistatic properties, is characterized by very low thermal conductivity, and mineral components provide mechanical strength and excellent thermal insulation properties. The resulting material is refractory and extremely reliable in the construction of load-bearing walls, without the need for further construction to additionally be insulated with heat-insulating materials. Thus, in hot and cold conditions, the cost of maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature is extremely low. At the same time, these bricks do not allow the formation of condensation on the walls, do not allow the development of fungi and parasites, and above all, thermal and acoustic comfort is guaranteed inside the building. Hemp bricks have a very long service life, but can be recycled at the end of the life of the structure.

Hemp insulation

The advantage of hemp insulation is its excellent heat and sound insulation, as well as fire retardant properties. Moreover, their use creates a healthier indoor climate. Hemp insulation regulates the humidity of rooms, helps the house to remain without mold and harmful microorganisms that cause allergies and diseases. It is widely used for insulation of roofs, floors, internal and external walls. That is why the project used heat-insulating materials from hemp to warm the floors and roof of the building.

Commentary experts of the Association "Ukrainian industrial hemp"

A forgotten ancient / new method of building buildings based on hemp building materials can replace traditional construction methods as an environmentally friendly, economically viable alternative. Trends in the global hemp construction market and the achievements of leading national companies specializing in the use of hemp raw materials for the construction of buildings and structures were demonstrated at the round table “Hemp raw materials -  technologies for its use in construction, production of biocomposite materials and furniture ”, which was held as part of the “ Hemp University ” .
