Global trends in cannabis production

30.09.2019

The Ukrainian market should not only guess consumer demand within the country, but also set the direction of the consumer vector in the direction of high quality and stable consumption, “weaving” this whole set into national traditions, with reference to regional opportunities.

The pages of the profile electronic publication of Ukrainian hemp breeders indicated “ How Americans Try to Overcome the Cannabis Overproduction Crisis ”, described the global “ Trends in the Hemp Industry ”, explained “ Why in Oregon technical hemp replaces the psychoactive ”, and “ What Overproduction of CBD in Switzerland Had ”. Some signs of the overproduction of cannabidiol are already being felt on the world market. This material describes individual trends that speak about the trend and dynamics of the development of the market for drug-free cannabinoids , primarily related to cannabidiol.

Experts from the USA and Europe agree that global trends in the hemp industry come down to a possible oversupply of CBD products on the market , while the consumer is not always ready for the pricing policy dictated by manufacturers. According to recent estimates, in the US market , hemp for the production of CBD is currently growing eight times more than was consumed before that time. This dynamics can lead not only to market transformation, but also to a certain decrease in the level of profitability for some manufacturers.

According to one of the leaders of a large American operator of the online hemp products market , in the USA many enterprises are at the stage of expanding their capacities, investing a lot of money in business development, while the rapid growth of the market leads to a drop in prices, which in turn will negatively affect their level of profitability. According to "conservative" estimates, the United States produced about 81.6 thousand tons of raw materials for CBD production, from which about 4.7 thousand tons of isolate will be extracted. The reduction in the price of raw materials for the production of cannabidiol for the period from July to October is expected to be more than 40%, while it is not a fact that the decline will stop.

Analysts at the American hemp products market report that this summer among the companies trading in hemp raw materials there has been a steady dynamic in the application of high percentages of discounts when drawing up sales agreements , which was previously used only occasionally. Industry experts attribute this to the fact that many companies are trying to get rid of stocks of old plant material collected in previous years, the quality of which is lower than that of the fresh harvest in 2019.

The instability of the American market influences quite a lot on the development of the European cannabis sector, as many manufacturers in Europe were aimed at working with American companies. There is also a 50% decline in consumer prices for CBD products . European manufacturers of hemp products are forced to adjust their pricing policy on a monthly basis, while tacking between rising production costs and a large stock of finished products.

Commentary of the Ukrainian Technical Hemp Association

Similar processes with price “carousels” have already occurred on the world market in the hemp sector of the economy, when the full or partial legalization of hemp products led to an increase in consumer demand, but with limited supply, creating an increase in retail prices and a high level of profitability for producers. But all these processes are temporary, and therefore not sufficiently predicted.

Often, in the hemp cultivation (cultivation) segment, agricultural producers invest significant resources during the production period, which they cannot always “beat off,” since the seasonality of crop production and the further simultaneous “throwing” of the grown raw materials to the market rapidly collapse in prices. In such a situation, farmers are often forced to sell their business, which is bought by less experienced “hemp growers,” who also do not always succeed.

General trends in the development of the global hemp market show that its formation directly depends on demand, which can easily be reduced by raising prices for finished products. Given global trends, the Ukrainian market should not only guess consumer demand within the country, but also set the direction of the consumer vector towards high quality and stable consumption, “weaving” this whole set into national traditions, with reference to regional opportunities.
