The first cannabis aircraft in the world originally from Canada (photo)

After we have carried out the studies necessary in such cases and made the appropriate conclusions, we will apply the knowledge and skills to other forms of using hemp plants as the basis for biocomposite materials (machine, automobile, shipbuilding; manufacturing of various household and sports products and etc.).

The pages of the profile electronic publication of Ukrainian hemp breeders demonstrated the features of the use of “Hemp biocomposites in North American aircraft manufacturing”. The article “ Canadian Hemp Breakthrough ” described the production of hemp biocomposites in the Winnipeg Innovation Center for the needs of modern aviation and aerospace construction . In 2014, attention was focused on the fact that “ Next year, a light-weight vessel made of hemp will rise into the sky for the first time .” At the moment, we can talk about the fact that Canada created and tested the first aircraft in the world, not only made from bio-composite materials based on hemp, but also using hemp oil as a fuel.

With a wingspan of almost 11 meters, the aircraft can accommodate one pilot and four passengers. According to the plans of the hemp plane’s creators, this kind of design can not only replace traditional light-weight aircraft operating in the passenger or cargo transportation or tourism market, but also demonstrate to large companies operating in the field of aviation and aerospace construction how it makes sense to replace expensive and heavy traditionally used materials (aluminum, fiberglass) for cheaper and lighter, not of fossil nature, but made on the basis of exclusive physically properties of hemp.

In particular, according to Derek Kesek, CEO of the Hemp Aircraft Manufacturing Company, “This project is our first test of an aircraft made from hemp. In the future, we plan to explore other possibilities of using the plant as an excellent raw material for the production of biocomposite materials. After we have carried out the studies necessary in such cases and made the appropriate conclusions, we will apply the knowledge and skills to other forms of using hemp plants as the basis for biocomposite materials (machine, automobile, shipbuilding; manufacturing of various household and sports products and etc.). "

For example, in the aircraft industry, the advantage of using cannabis is its greater lightness compared to traditional aerospace materials such as aluminum or fiberglass. As a result of the use of hemp-based biocomposite materials, the amount of required fuel used during the operation of the aircraft is significantly reduced. Another positive point is the fact that hemp raw materials are non-toxic, more durable and require much less water and soil than other plants, of which biocomposites can be used in the aerospace industry. In addition, compared to steel or carbon fiber, hemp has almost no effect on the environment after the moment of disposal of the aircraft, after the end of the aircraft’s life.

Significant is the fact that the first flight of the “hemp plane” took place exactly in the place where the Wright brothers made the first airplane flight in the history of mankind. After the flight tests, the hemp plane will be on display at the Wright Brothers National Memorial.

Commentary of the Ukrainian Technical Hemp Association

During the second day of the “ Hemp University ” a round table will be held on “ Hemp raw materials - technologies for its use in construction, production of biocomposite materials and furniture ”. The third panel of the round table “Production of biocomposite materials based on hemp raw materials” will cover the following issues:

- “Market leaders in cannabis-based biocomposite materials, as well as industries that actively use bioplastic masses made from various plant components” - representative of the Hempconsulting information and analytical platform )

- "Possibilities of using biocomposite materials made on the basis of hemp in certain economic sectors of Ukraine";
