Drug-free cannabinoids in cosmetic products

28.01.2020

Due to its success in the market, due to the significant therapeutic properties, drug-free cannabinoids of plant origin are becoming one of the main assets in the field of modern healthcare and cosmetology. The use of properly prepared leaves and inflorescences of plants, which excludes extraction, as part of cosmetic or pharmacological agents, makes it possible to work not in separate parts of the plant, but in hundreds of elements (cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, terpenoids, finols, etc.) of technical hemp, which have a huge therapeutic potential that enhance the healing effects of each other - the so-called ensemble effect. The experiments on the use of leaves and inflorescences of technical hemp of a therapeutic orientation in the formulation of cosmetics confirm the extreme effectiveness of just such a method of using the healing properties of the plant for the skin.

There are very few scientific studies conducted to study the effect of cannabinoids on human skin. Despite the fact that in all economically developed countries, drug-free cannabinoids (primarily cannabidiol, CBD) are actively added as various constituents to all known types of products (from pet food to biologically active additives), the effect of the plant’s active elements, possessing significant therapeutic properties is not well understood.

According to experts, some drug-free cannabinoids have analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. They provide an antioxidant effect, that is, they help in eliminating the free radicals present in the body. It is this set of properties that make drug-free cannabinoids especially effective in dermatology. They help relieve chronic skin diseases such as acne, psoriasis, eczema, peeling, or rosacea, which are extremely difficult to treat with traditional treatments. In addition, drug-free cannabinoids effectively soothe irritating manifestations such as itching, tingling, and burning sensations.

Just one serious study is often cited as irrefutable evidence of the healing properties of drug-free cannabinoids that have excellent effect on the skin. The conducted set of experiments gives great hope primarily to scientists, as it explains the mechanism of the possible treatment of such a serious skin disease as psoriasis. The reason for the effectiveness of the action of drug-free cannabinoids in relation to psoriasis remains to be elucidated, however, the researchers concluded that for a comprehensive study of this issue, additional experiments are necessary. Another commonly cited study among cosmetologists suggests that drug-free cannabinoids can be extremely effective in reducing acne.

The cosmetics industry has not escaped the “dominance” of CBD, at least dozens of cosmetic products that include drug-free cannabinoids are already on the market. Some analysts of the cosmetic market claim that cosmetics with at least cannabidiol in their composition will occupy up to 15% of the skin care products market with a total value of about $ 167 billion.

In the past few years, the demand for cosmetics and various body and hair care products in the formulations of which includes cannabidiol is beyond doubt, and the world's leading retailers of cosmetic and pharmacological products (CVS, Walgreens and Sephora) are already adding or are considering the use of drug-free cannabinoids in the formulation goods on the shelves of their stores.

It is often extremely difficult for consumers to talk about the effectiveness of using non-drug cannabinoids in cosmetic products, as they are often added along with other more traditional herbal ingredients that work effectively on the skin. For example, cannabinoid-free hemp oil is also an effective skin moisturizer. However, most cosmetic companies in the formulation of the drug only hemp seed oil is positioned as a cannabinoid ingredient that effectively affects the external integument of the human body. It is precisely this kind of marketing moves that confuse consumers for the most part.

Commentary of the Ukrainian Technical Hemp Association

Clinical trials demonstrate that drug-free cannabinoids interact not only with TRVP-1 receptors present in the skin and responsible for burning or even painful sensations, but also with CB2 receptors present in the immune system. Already, it can be argued that due to its success in the market, due to significant therapeutic properties, drug-free cannabinoids of plant origin are becoming one of the main assets in the field of modern healthcare and cosmetology. The use of properly prepared leaves and inflorescences of plants, which excludes extraction, as part of cosmetic or pharmacological agents, makes it possible to work not in separate parts of the plant, but in hundreds of elements (cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, terpenoids, finols, etc.) of hemp, which have a huge therapeutic potential that enhance the healing effects of each other - the so-called ensemble effect. The experiments on the use of leaves and inflorescences of technical hemp of a therapeutic orientation in the formulation of cosmetics confirm the extreme effectiveness of just such a method of using the healing properties of the plant for the skin. In particular, these points are planned to be discussed during the upcoming round table, which in April 2020 will be held as part of the Hemp University. In particular, during the round table the anxiolytic, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of drug-free cannabinoids, which are actively used in the world for the treatment of various kinds of skin diseases, will be considered. In addition, marketing of cosmetic products based on drug-free cannabinoids will be considered using the example of France, when it should be documented that the biologically active substances of hemp were obtained from plant varieties registered in the official register and the amount of tetrahydrocannabinol in which cannot exceed 0.2%.

One of the questions posed for consideration during the round table is the relaxing and calming effect (both physical and mental) of drug-free cannabinoids in sports cosmetic preparations. Another exclusive advantage of cosmetic products based on the therapeutic properties of hemp is that they eliminate the stress factor that stimulates the appearance of skin dysfunctions.
