In the Czech Republic, they plan to compensate for the cost of hemp therapy

02.10.2019

We are forced to follow the path of adopting pan-European trends, depriving the Ukrainian consumer of the possibility of using affordable hemp therapy , which ultimately will negatively affect the development of not only domestic consumption, but will also prevent the development of our own capacities for the production of various forms of medicines and therapeutic agents from those already registered in Ukraine varieties of technical hemp therapeutic orientation.

The pages of the profile electronic publication of Ukrainian hemp breeders already described the features of “ State medical insurance and medical hemp sales in the Czech Republic ”, raised the question of developing the country's domestic market with an appropriate circulation of medicines made on the basis of the therapeutic properties of the plant . It was noted that the Czech Republic has one of the oldest programs in Europe aimed at using the exclusive properties of plants for medicinal purposes , and the Czech Republic became the second country (after the Netherlands ) on the continent, which allowed the cultivation of medical hemp in the domestic market. Despite the significant successes of the country in the field of legal support for the use of cannabisa for medical purposes , even a few years after the launch, the market has still not been able to “gain momentum”.

In connection with this situation, the country's government is constantly looking for opportunities to develop the medical cannabis market and create a constant demand for this type of product , realizing that maintaining leadership positions on the European continent will give the country’s economy long-term sufficiently large and constant financial injections. So, last week the Czech government announced plans to subsidize the cost of medicines by including them in the state health insurance program. Patients who use medical hemp will be reimbursed up to 90% of the cost of the respective prescriptions. The prepared bill passed through parliament last week and is expected to enter into force in the new 2020.

The use of hemp for medical purposes was regulated in the Czech Republic in 2010. However, access to medications for ordinary patients was quite difficult. Cannabis-based medical products are currently not covered by health insurance, and their cost is not regulated. This situation complicates patients' access to hemp products at an affordable price .

On social networks, Minister of Health Adam Vojtech wrote that starting from the new year, potential patients who will be recommended for hemp therapy will be able to pay small amounts for their treatment, since this also happens when using other non-hemp medicines. It is also planned that the Czech State Drug Control Institute will regulate drug prices, including the amount of the additional fee for each specific course of treatment.

Most cannabis-based pharmaceutical companies in the Czech Republic specialize in producing drugs related to the treatment of chronic pain, postoperative pain syndromes, etc. Official statistics say that hemp preparations in the country in 90% of cases are used specifically for the treatment of pain syndromes, and only 4% of patients undergo hemp therapy for the treatment of multiple sclerosis.

According to new recommendations for one patient per month, it is planned to use a dose of 30 g of medical hemp . The government believes that the proposed consumption limit per patient will be sufficient to undergo a full treatment of patients. Minister Vojtech explained: “We believe that 30 g per patient is a sufficient norm, because today one patient consumes an average of up to 10 g per month. This was confirmed by a survey conducted among medical personnel prescribing prescription for hemp drugs . ” In this case, patients who require appropriate drugs in excess of the established limit will be given the opportunity to receive the necessary recipes for treatment with detailed instructions from the attending physician and the approval of a medical expert.

Commentary of the Ukrainian Technical Hemp Association

Not always what they try to pass off as “positive” to us is such. Today, the Czech Republic is a vivid example of trends in the European market, when pharmaceutical companies involved in the production of hemp preparations form consumers to their maximum extent. Such companies lobby their interests through various state structures, “drive” a potential consumer into pharmacies, where they can only buy expensive and not always effective drugs, making it impossible to choose affordable forms of treatment for the patient, without even providing information about the advisability of using alternative hemp therapy methods - hemp food products , cosmetics , dietary supplements with a huge therapeutic effect .

The Ukrainian market is not adopting the best trends in the formation of the hemp products market . We are forced to follow the path of adopting pan-European trends, depriving the Ukrainian consumer of the possibility of using affordable hemp therapy , which ultimately will negatively affect the development of not only domestic consumption, but will also not make it possible to develop our own capacities for the production of various forms of medicines and therapeutic agents from those already registered in Ukraine varieties of technical hemp therapeutic orientation.
