The country legalized cannabis for medical use in 2017 and lifted a ban on the cultivation and production of plants in 2018. Greece, which is gradually emerging from the financial crisis of the decade, in November 2018 issued the first two licenses to private cannabis producers, with government officials considering another 12 similar requests for the cultivation and processing of cannabisa.

The countries of southern Europe, where there is a lot of sun and mild winter, such as Greece, Portugal and Cyprus, are ideal for growing cannabis, and over time can become serious competitors to all countries with the rapidly developing cannabis industry of the continent. Cheap labor and access to the markets of the EU and the Middle East also make Greece an ideal country for the expansion of foreign cannabis companies to nearby markets from this particular region.
