Cannabidiol improves blood flow to parts of the brain associated with memory and decision making

17.08.2020

In the course of using the flowers of technical hemp of national selection of the "Mriya" variety as a food product, a significant increase in oxygen assimilation by the brain of consumers is observed. The experiments carried out aimed at the treatment of a number of neurodegenerative diseases with Mriya flowers by methods that exclude extraction indicate that the methods developed in Ukraine for the use of green mass of therapeutic hemp varieties have great potential, including for the treatment of PTSD, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's, dementia, multisystem atrophy, etc.

Research funded by the British Medical Association by University College London suggests that small amounts of cannabidiol help increase blood flow to the hippocampus (part of the brain's limbic system involved in the formation of emotions, the transition of short-term memory long-term). The data obtained by British researchers indicate that the therapeutic properties of drug-free cannabinoids (including cannabidiol) may become one of the main factors in the treatment of a number of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The experiments tested how plant cannabidiol affects cerebral blood flow in various brain regions involved in processes related to memory. Dr. Michael Bloomfield, who participates in the project, states that “Plant-based cannabidiol helps reduce symptoms of psychosis and anxiety. There is ample evidence that plant cannabinoids can improve memory function. In addition, cannabidiol alters the way the brain processes emotional memories, which may explain its therapeutic effects in the treatment of PTSD and other mental health conditions. Unfortunately, the mechanisms underlying the effect of the therapeutic elements of cannabis on memory have not yet been fully understood.

During the experiments, 15 young healthy volunteers were given 600 mg of cannabidiol orally or a placebo. The doses of the drugs were presented in identical capsules, so the participants did not know what they were taking. The researchers further measured blood flow to the hippocampus using a brain scan method called magnetic resonance imaging, which measures the level of oxygen in the blood. It has been determined that plant cannabidiol dramatically increases blood flow in the hippocampus, but does not cause significant differences in blood flow in other areas of the middle temporal lobe, an important component of which is the hippocampus. In the prefrontal cortex (an area of the brain used for planning and decision making), CBD caused a significant increase in blood flow in the orbitofrontal cortex.

According to participants in the experiments, this is the first study to find that cannabidiol increases blood flow to key regions of the brain involved in memory. Experimental data support the idea that CBD affects blood flow in the human brain. Further experiments may lead to the development of methods aimed at treating a number of neurodegenerative diseases, primarily Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, and PTSD.

Commentary of experts of the Association "Ukrainian technical hemp"

Studies of the possibility of using the leaves and inflorescences of therapeutic hemp as a tasty and extremely healthy food product in our country confirm the results of the experiments of our British colleagues. In the course of using (periodically or on a regular basis) flowers of technical hemp of national selection, variety "Mriya" as a food product, a significant increase in oxygen assimilation by the brain of consumers is observed. The experiments carried out aimed at the treatment of a number of neurodegenerative diseases with Mriya flowers by methods that exclude extraction indicate that the methods developed in Ukraine for the use of “green mass” of therapeutic hemp varieties have enormous potential, including for the treatment of PTSD, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's , dementia, multisystem atrophy, etc. Examples of treatment of patients suffering from various types of neurodegenerative or other diseases of the brain and nervous system with the help of oral use of the leaves and inflorescences of technical hemp of therapeutic orientation, as well as the developed national methods of treatment will be presented to the listeners of the Hemp University during the round table “ Experience of using therapeutic elements technical hemp as a raw material for food, cosmetics, biologically active or feed additives ”, which will be held on the second day of the 5th course of study at the National University of Bioresources and Environmental Management of Ukraine .
