Belgians invest 7 million to expand production of building materials from hemp

05.08.2020

It can be stated that in the world the market of building materials and technologies based on the use of the properties of the hemp plant is not only rapidly developing and commercializing, but also companies are crystallizing that with the produced hemp products are not only competing on equal terms with the traditional (made from fossil raw materials), but also gradually increase their presence in the market. A sign of the formation of the hemp construction market in our country is the emergence over the past few years of a fairly significant number of companies that position themselves as specialists in the market for the use of hemp building materials, as well as the shortage of hemp fire that has appeared for the first time in the last few years, used in the national construction industry. It can be assumed that in the medium term, Ukraine will implement a project to build industrial facilities specializing in the production of building materials from hemp raw materials.

In March 2019, on the pages of a specialized electronic publication of Ukrainian cannabis growers, it was said that " The Belgians are investing 5 million in expanding the production capacity of a plant that produces hemp blocks ." Representatives of the company announced that during the year they were able to attract € 7 million, and additional financial resources will be used to increase the manufacturability of production processes, which will help not only to save on the rational and most efficient use of the company's forces and resources, but also to create new construction technologies based on hemp raw materials. Why this information is interesting to Ukrainian cannabis growers and what tendencies it says about the development of what trends in the European construction market, let us try to speculate in this material.

According to the information provided to the media, the creation of new production facilities is planned on an area of 2 hectares, and the plant itself should be “launched” in 2021. After reaching the design capacity of the created production, the company will be able to increase the number of manufactured boiler blocks from 1 to 5 million pieces. The basis for this kind of investment in increasing production capacity was the analysis of the growth dynamics of the market for blocks, bricks, and other building materials made from lime and hemp fire, which has been increasing for the eighth year in a row.

According to a representative of the Belgian company, the new plant will “become one of the most innovative in the green building sector” and “part of the emerging industry of the 4th industrial revolution”, in which robots and cobots will be widely used, as well as software used for enterprise resource planning and improving the logistics component of the enterprise.

According to the representative of the IsoHemp company, on the one hand, there is a demand for the products manufactured by the enterprise, on the other hand, there are huge problems in the construction industry associated with the introduction of technologies for the use of renewable energy sources, as well as the use of non-fossil raw materials, namely natural materials. It is on the basis of the realities of the European construction market, as well as the growth of certain trends in the market of building materials made from plant materials, the management of the enterprise made a decision not only to increase its capacity, but also to implement the concept of implementing the industry 4.0 technologies at the enterprise.

By creating new capacities for the production of building materials from plant materials, the Belgians are responding to the growing demand in Europe for environmentally friendly building materials that are friendly to the human body, which make it possible to make old buildings more energy efficient, and build new ones initially based on the possibility of creating non-volatile structures.

Commentary of experts of the Association "Ukrainian technical hemp"

The Belgian company IsoHemp started by hand-making building blocks from raw hemp in 2012. Gradually introducing various machines and mechanisms into the production process, the volume of production for several years was increased to 1 million products made from hemp raw materials. For eight years, the marketing department of the company has established sales of products manufactured at the enterprise in almost all European countries, as well as Israel. At the moment, the enterprise has a research unit that not only controls the quality of the created bone blocks and hemp bricks, but also works on improving the characteristics of the building materials produced based on the properties of the hemp plant, as well as generating new technologies and products from hemp raw materials that maximize can be effectively used in the modern construction industry. The company was able to set up the production process in such a way that it recycles all waste obtained during technological operations and recovers industrial water, and therefore in June 2020, the Solar Impulse Foundation was recognized as a structure that created building materials and technologies for their use. allowing to reduce energy consumption using natural raw materials. According to IsoHemp representatives, about 30% of its sales come from materials used in new buildings, and the rest of the manufactured products are sold in various projects to improve the characteristics of existing structures (insulation, erection of internal walls or non-standard structures in existing buildings ).

We recall the thousand-year history of using hemp raw materials for the construction of various types of structures (buildings, bridges, roads, urban infrastructure  , as well as “ Scaling the experience of construction based on hemp fires implemented in France ”, a significant increase in the production capacity of Chanvrière , the acquisition of the Dutch “HempFlax” producer of natural insulating materials "Thermo Natur GmbH", the decision of the Italian "Senini" , which focuses on green building technologies, which are based on the biological properties of hemp, projects implemented in Canada based on the "Green Lego" technology. Consider the ongoing projects of large-scale hemp construction in Great Britain , France, Bulgaria , Sweden , Holland , Austria , Australia , Luxembourg , Canada , Germany , USA , Czech Republic , Ireland , Spain .

Initiation of various research projects - SUNIMPLANT (Morocco), aimed at studying the properties of building materials created on the basis of the hemp plant and the popularization of hemp construction in Great Britain , Italy , Habiter2030 (France) , Holland .

It can be assumed that in the medium term, a project will be implemented in Ukraine for the construction of industrial facilities specializing in the production of building materials from hemp raw materials.

The above trends in modern hemp construction were highlighted during the round table " Hemp raw materials - technologies for its use in construction, production of biocomposite materials and furniture ", held within the framework of the " Hemp University " in November 2019. The next course of study at the Hemp University will take place in the second half of September 2020. During the second day of classes, a round table will be held “ Experience in using the therapeutic elements of industrial hemp as raw materials for food, cosmetic preparations, biologically active or feed additives ”.
