At the University of Oxford launched a project to study cannabis

14.04.2017

The project is aimed at a comprehensive study of the effectiveness of various cannabinoids in the therapy of pain syndrome, inflammatory processes of soft tissues, as well as in the treatment of cancer and a number of neurological diseases.

In early April of this year, Oxford University announced the creation of a new project to study the therapeutic properties of medical hemp. Research will be carried out jointly with biomedical companies. The so-called "Cannabis research project" is aimed at a comprehensive study of the effectiveness of various cannabinoids in the therapy of pain syndrome, inflammatory processes of soft tissues, as well as in the treatment of cancer and a number of neurological diseases.

Professor-oncologist Ahmed Ahmed in an official press release noted that in recent years scientists of different countries managed to discover the amazing medical properties of cannabis plants. And now it was the turn of Oxford scientists to check the existing data on the effectiveness of using medical hemp in various forms of severe and chronic diseases. In particular, the team of scientists is interested in the possibility of using psychoactive hemp in the therapy of oncological diseases.

According to Neil Mahapatra, director of Oxford Cannabinoid Technologies, the main partner of the university, today investors are ready to invest more than 10 million pounds ($ 12.5 million) in the project.

"It's no secret that cannabis, as well as its extracts, have been used for a long time and successfully used in many countries of the world for the therapy and alleviation of the symptoms of various diseases," says Mr. Mahapatra. "Despite the fact that medicine already knows the beneficial effects of plants, we still do not know the exact mechanism of their effect on the human body. Thus, our project is aimed at summarizing the practical basis of hemp medicine under a reasoned exact scientific basis. It is possible that at the end of our research, Britain will become one of the world centers of hemp medicine. "

Despite the fact that in England hemp still applies to narcotic plants, the extracts of cannabidiol in the country are completely decriminalized. In addition, the authorities allow the use of Sativex in the therapy of epilepsy and multiple sclerosis. Today the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party of Great Britain are on the side of the complete legalization of cannabis and its production for medical purposes. Their stand is supported by a minority of Laborites, as well as by the ruling conservatives.

Patrick Stewart, a famous British actor, recently spoke in support of the legalization of medical cannabis in the country and noted that he has been successfully using cannabis oils for the treatment of arthritis for a long time. In an interview with the Daily Telegraph newspaper, the actor noted that he was prescribed a joint pain treatment by a doctor in Los Angeles, having given out a prescription for the purchase of a spray based on hemp oils in specialized, legal stores that work freely throughout California. According to Stewart, the drug was effective and helped the actor cope with pain in the joints. That is why he stands in support of the project to study the therapeutic properties of cannabis in Oxford.

Today, as part of the project, a selection of volunteers for clinical trials is being conducted. In addition to carrying out the research itself, an international conference on the medical use of cannabis will be held at the end of this year.
