In Italy, farmers grow cannabis to clean the soil of pollution

31.03.2017

This phenomenon is due to the fact that plants of this unique culture are able to draw molecules of heavy metals from the soil and accumulate them in their tissues. Subsequently, the plant splits these substances into compounds that are safe for the environment and humans.

In the suburbs of Taranto in the south of Italy, livestock keepers actively engaged in cultivating technical hemp not for sale, but as a kind of sorbent for cleaning the soil from heavy metals and other contaminants.

According to the local farmer Vincenzo Fanaro, he was not going to cultivate this crop, since from time immemorial his family was engaged exclusively in breeding sheep and growing rice. It so happened that in 2008 the authorities informed Vincenzo that his lands were significantly contaminated. As it turned out, the farmer's land is on the coast of the river, which receives waste from the largest steel plant in the European Union. With water, heavy metal particles enter the soil, accumulate in the tissues of plants and, then, enter the body of sheep.

The Italian authorities suggested that Vincenzo get rid of livestock, sell land and change his place of residence, but he found a way out of the situation and thus saved his family business. On the Internet, Vincenzo came across information on phytoremediation of soils - growing plants to restore the fertility of the soil and its purification from toxins. This prompted him to think of using technical hemp to save his sheep population. The results did not take long. Quite quickly, hemp plants cleared the "lost" earth of hazardous substances. This phenomenon is due to the fact that plants of this unique culture are able to draw molecules of heavy metals from the soil and accumulate them in their tissues. Subsequently, the plant splits these substances into compounds that are safe for the environment and humans. Plants hemp no one removes and does not recycle to obtain fiber or seeds. They freely grow on pastures. The example of Vincenzo began to be inherited by other local farmers.

For the first time, the technology of using cannabis for soil purification has been successfully tested on lands affected by radiation in the zone of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The results were stunning - just a couple of generations of cannabis plants are able to completely clean the soil of any contamination, including radioactive isotopes. Learning about this, Italian farmers came to the conclusion that with the contamination of their lands with waste from the steel plant, cannabis cope much faster - and were right.
